Siege of Detroit - War of 1812

Attack of Detroit - War of 1812 Attack of Detroit - Conflict Dates: The Siege of Detroit occurred August 15-16, 1812, during the War of (1812-1815). Armed forces Commanders at Detroit US Brigadier General William Hull582 regulars, 1,600 volunteer army England Significant General Isaac BrockTecumseh330 regulars, 400 volunteer army, 600 Native Americans Attack of Detroit - Background: As war mists assembled in the early long stretches of 1812, President James Madison was empowered by a few of his key counselors, including Secretary of War William Eustis, to start making arrangements to guard the northwest wilderness. Regulated by the Governor of the Michigan Territory, William Hull, the locale had hardly any ordinary soldiers to shield against a British intrusion or assaults by Native American clans in the region. Making a move, Madison coordinated that a military be shaped and that it move to strengthen the key station of Fort Detroit. Attack of Detroit - Hull Takes Command: In spite of the fact that he at first cannot, Hull was provided order of this power with the position of brigadier general. Voyaging south, he showed up at Dayton, OH on May 25 to assume responsibility for three regiments of Ohio civilian army drove by Colonels Lewis Cass, Duncan McArthur, and James Findlay. Gradually moving north, they were joined by Lieutenant Colonel James Millers fourth US Infantry at Urbana, OH. Moving across Black Swamp, he got a letter from Eustis on June 26. Conveyed by a dispatch and dated June 18, it entreated Hull to arrive at Detroit as war was inevitable. A second letter from Eustis, additionally dated June 18, educated the American officer that war had been announced. Sent by normal mail, this letter didn't arrive at Hull until July 2. Baffled by his moderate advancement, Hull arrived at the mouth of the Maumee River on July 1. Anxious to speed the development, he recruited the clipper Cuyahoga and left his dispatches, individual correspondence, clinical supplies, and debilitated. Sadly for Hull, the British in Upper Canada knew that a condition of war existed. Thus, Cuyahoga was caught off Fort Malden by HMS General Hunter the following day as it endeavored to enter the Detroit River. Attack of Detroit - The American Offensive: Arriving at Detroit on July 5, Hull was fortified by around 140 Michigan state army carrying his complete power to around 2,200 men. In spite of the fact that short on food, Hull was coordinated by Eustis to cross the stream and move against Fort Malden and Amherstburg. Progressing on July 12, Hulls hostile was hampered by a portion of his local army who would not serve outside of the United States. Therefore, he ended on the east bank in spite of the way that Colonel Henry Proctor, instructing at Fort Malden, had an army numbering just 300 regulars and 400 Native Americans. As Hull was finding a way to attack Canada, a blended power of Native Americans and Canadian hide brokers astounded the American army at Fort Mackinac on July 17. Learning of this, Hull got expanding reluctant as he accepted huge quantities of Native American warriors would slip from the north. Despite the fact that he had chosen to assault Fort Malden on August 6, his purpose faltered and he requested American powers back over the waterway two days after the fact. He was additionally worried about decreasing arrangements as his gracefully lines south of Detroit were enduring an onslaught by British and Native American powers. Attack of Detroit - The British Respond: While Hull spent the beginning of August ineffectively endeavoring to re-open his gracefully lines, British fortifications were arriving at Fort Malden. Having maritime control of Lake Erie, Major General Isaac Brock, the officer for Upper Canada, had the option to move troops west from the Niagara boondocks. Showing up at Amherstburg on August 13, Brock met with the prominent Shawnee pioneer Tecumseh and the two quickly shaped a solid compatibility. Having around 730 regulars and civilian army just as Tecumsehs 600 warriors, Brocks armed force stayed littler than his rival. To counterbalance this bit of leeway, Brock searched through the caught reports and dispatches that had been taken on board Cuyahoga just as during commitment south of Detroit. Having a point by point comprehension of the size and state of Hulls armed force, Brock likewise discovered that its spirit was low and that Hull was profoundly terrified of Native American assault. Playing on this dread, he drafted a letter mentioning that not any more Native Americans be sent to Amherstburg and expressing that he had more than 5,000 close by. This letter was purposefully permitted to fall into American hands. Attack of Detroit - Guile Deception Win the Day: Presently, Brock sent Hull a letter requesting his acquiescence and expressing: The power available to me approves me to expect of you the prompt acquiescence of Fort Detroit. It is a long way from my goal to participate in a war of annihilation, yet you should know, that the various group of Indians who have appended themselves to my soldiers, will be out of hand the second the challenge commences†¦ Proceeding with the arrangement of double dealings, Brock requested additional regalia having a place with 41st Regiment to be given to the state army to cause his power to seem to have more regulars. Different stratagems were led to beguile the Americans with regards to the genuine size of the British armed force. Troopers were told to light individual open air fires and a few walks were led to cause British power to seem bigger. These endeavors attempted to sabotage Hulls previously debilitating certainty. On August 15, Brock initiated a barrage of Fort Detroit from batteries on the east bank of the stream. The following day, Brock and Tecumseh crossed the stream with the aim of hindering the American flexibly lines and laying attack to the fortress. Brock had to change these plans promptly as Hull had dispatched MacArthur and Cass with 400 men to re-open correspondences toward the south. Instead of be gotten between this power and the stronghold, Brock moved to attack Fort Detroit from the west. As his men moved, Tecumseh over and again walked his warriors through a hole in the woods as they radiated boisterous battle cries. This development drove the Americans to accept that the quantity of warriors present was a lot higher than in reality. As the British drew closer, a ball from one of the batteries hit the officials mess in Fort Detroit dispensing setbacks. As of now gravely un-nerved by the circumstance and dreading a slaughter on account of Tecumsehs men, Hull broke, and against the desires of his officials, requested a white banner raised and started give up exchanges. Fallout of the Siege of Detroit: In the Siege of Detroit, Hull lost seven executed and 2,493 caught. In giving in, he gave up MacArthur and Cass men just as a moving toward flexibly train. While the civilian army were paroled and allowed to withdraw, the American regulars were taken to Quebec as detainees. Over the span of the activity, Brocks order endured two injured. A humiliating thrashing, the loss of Detroit saw the circumstance in the Northwest fundamentally changed and immediately ran American any expectations of a triumphant walk into Canada. Fortification Detroit stayed in British hands for longer than a year until being re-taken by Major General William Henry Harrison in the fall of 1813 after Commodore Oliver Hazard Perrys triumph at the Battle of Lake Erie. Hailed as a saint, Brocks wonder demonstrated brief as he was executed at the Battle of Queenston Heights on October 13, 1812. Margaret Atwoods Tasting Menu

Margaret Atwoods Tasting Menu In November, the Wall Street Journal published “Rethinking the Familiar Book Tour,” a piece that argued bookstore readings were (or should be) a thing of the past. For many, this was not a new argument. For others, especially in less urban areas, this concept was a bold one. It has made me wonder about how bookstores, authors, and readers can work together to build better, more engaging book events.  There were no sock puppets or guitars. There were jokes, though, and even a song. Margaret Atwood may have been following a more traditional format than the Green brothers, but she still put on quite a show for the 1100 people in the audience. Atwood visited   Houston as a part of Inprints Margaret Root Brown Reading Series.   She had visited before, and the response to that visit was what made them shift the series from a small museum auditorium to the larger spaces available in the citys theater district. The turnout for this event proved that they made the right choice. Ms. Atwood began with what she referred to as a tasting menu of a reading, a few short excerpts from three of her more recent works. She started with the short story Stone Mattress, which appeared in The New Yorker last month. The story contains the subtle wit that readers have come to expect from Atwood, but when she reads it, the humor is no longer subtle. The story is funny. She is   funny, and she knows it. She even laughs at   her own jokes as she reads. With some people this might be annoying but with Atwood it is, somehow, endearing. The next item on the tasting menu was an excerpt from In Other Worlds, a collection of her essays and lectures on her relationship with speculative fiction.   This particular essay dealt with her reading of the novel She by H. Rider Haggard. I learned very little about the novel, but I learned a lot about her development as a reader:   I did not make a distinction between great literature or any other. I just liked reading.  There were more jokes and more laughter. And then she told us that she was going to sing. The final taste came in the form of a chapter from The Year of the Flood.  This particular chapter focused on one of the many religious festivals celebrated by Gods Gardners.   She read the homily offered by Adam One on Mole Day and then sang the childrens hymn that followed. It was not as grand, Im sure, as the choral performances that were included as part of the book tour for the novels 2009 release, but it was pretty impressive, nonetheless. The one element that was present in all of these readings, and that wove its way through the question-and-answer period that followed, was humor. She made us laugh. She made herself laugh. Atwood explained that she makes these jokes, that she uses humor in her writing in the way that she does, because the subjects that she tackles are hard. They would become intolerable otherwise. When the interviewer, author Robert Boswell, commented on the fact that she was laughing at her own reading, she was quick to point out that she also cries at all the sad scenes: Its not all laughs, you know. And then she made another joke. Atwood played to her audience, talking about her love of science and making geology jokes fitting for a city that has its economy based in the oil and gas industries. She discussed her accidental role as an activist and the part that Twitter has played in that. She also talked about her audience. In the beginning, she wrote for the great reader in the sky with impeccable taste. Though her understanding of how publishing and the rest of the world works has changed since those early days (she said she could write a phone book now and it would get published), she is still writing for that all-knowing reader. There are just a few carefully chosen readers whose opinions she trusts, too. It may not have had the production value that John Greens tour stop did, but the audience was more than pleased. Even the teenagers. What are some of the more notable author events that you have attended? What made them stand out? ____________________________ Cassandra Neace teaches college students how to write essays and blogs about books and book-related goodness at Indie Reader Houston. Merchant of Venice Shylock Analysis Essay - 1044 Words

Robert F. Kennedy stated, â€Å"Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope... and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.† In Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice, Shylock is the core of all ripples. He lashed out against the prejudice that was thrust upon him and is considered evil for doing so. The Merchant of Venice brought together different characters of different religions. Shakespeare used characters in this play to reflect sixteenth century views on Christianity and Judaism. The character Shylock wass†¦show more content†¦This duality of Shylock being portrayed with positive points as well as bad was developed further at the end of act 1. Early on in the play Antonio described Shylock as the Devil and stated, â€Å"The d evil can cite Scripture for his purpose† (Act1 scene 3 line 107). The devil is described in the dictionary as, the supreme spirit of evil and nowhere in the text or in Shylocks actions does it suggest this. Clear resentment and tension was shared between Shylock and Antonio. In one of Shylocks monologues he explained, â€Å"I hate him for he is a Christian† (Act 1 scene3 line 42). A contemporary audience during Shakespeares time would have been deeply offended at this attempt to degrade a Christian and this would have easily made Shylock evil in their eyes. Due to Shylocks lower status in this scene he spoke in prose, whereas Antonio spoke in verse. This showed the difference in position between the two characters and the wide gap linking Judaism and Christianity. Respect for Shylock may be less easily attained when he doesnt offer any to Antonio. When the bond was made between Antonio and Shylock it is easy to see how Shylock’s character can be considered the de vil as he binds Antonio to contract, â€Å"An equal pound/ of your fair flesh, to be cut off and taken† (Act 1 scene 3 line 161). Requesting a pound of flesh was possibly a little too extravagant; it suggested that he was capable of and willing to take a life. Creating an Inviting Classroom Environment Free Essays

In this fastback, the authors make two major contentions in their introduction to this pamphlet. The first is that how a school looks does affect how everyone who goes there feels about it- and what goes on inside it. Furthermore, the authors assert that, while circumstances usually prohibit teachers from changing the entire school, they can and should make a difference in their own classrooms. We will write a custom essay sample on Creating an Inviting Classroom Environment or any similar topic only for you Order Now In this review I will be addressing these two major premises (Jones 8). I totally agree with the authors that the way a school looks affects people’s perception of the school as well as what goes on in it. Blackford High School is a perfect example to support this theory. BHS is and always has been well maintained and groomed. When I first interviewed for employment here ten years ago, I asked the principal if the school was relatively new I was shocked when he told me that the school was in fact 21 years old. I feel that when people drive by our school they get a good impression of it. Additionally, I am very proud of our facility when I have personal or professional guests at school. (Brown 69). I also agree with the authors that this precept also hold true for individual classrooms Harrison and Bullock gave examples of two contrasting classes to prove that an inviting environment and housekeeping are critical to student achievement/performance. One classroom was cluttered, outdated, and impersonal- an uninviting dump. The other classroom was neat, orderly, yet warm, inviting, comfortable, and user-friendly. I agree with the authors that the second classroom was the ideal and the one that is more conducive to student learning. Furthermore I agree with the reasons to focus on environment that they have identified (psychologically positive, quality lighting, noise, etc.) However I strongly disagree with them when they contend facility size and age are not factors when creating an environment pleasant classroom. After surveying students, teachers, and parents as to what they thought was important to a classroom environment (furniture, aesthetics, comfort, instructional items, and professional items.) Finally they made recommendations as how best to use these categorical items to create the ideal classroom. It is these suggestions and the implication that I can incorporate them that I have a problem with. Size IS a factor. My room is crammed with the â€Å"essentials† of school operation. In my room you will find a teacher desk, 33 student desks, one teacher computer station, one small book case which holds my personal professional books as well as paperbacks for students, a raised platform and podium for speech performances, a radio soundboard cart and an additional small table with a boom box for radio classes and one small teacher work table. I don’t have any room. I can stand at the front edge of my desk and touch the first row of student desks (I don’t even have to reach). The students in the back row can turn around and touch the back wall of the room. Much to my dismay, I am not going to be afforded additional space in which to conduct speech and radio classes. Furthermore, I am not going to be given individual classroom temperature controls or a phone. It is a fact that I come to accept. I would LOVE to have, as suggested, tables and desks, a comfort space for reading, student storage space, and any number of the other items they suggested. However, it will not happen at Blackford High School. How to cite Creating an Inviting Classroom Environment, Essay examples

The Plant Cell Essays - Organelles, Membrane Biology, Cell Biology

The Plant Cell Cell Wall Size: Around 1? Basic Function: * Hold the shape of the cell. * Strengthen the cell. Covering the cell membrane of the plant cell, there is the cell wall. The cell wall is composed of two layers of rigid, hard cellulose embedded in compounds like pectin and lignin. Pores in the cell wall allow molecules to pass through. The cell wall has two parts. The primary cell wall is formed during the growth of the cell. After the cell has stopped growing, a secondary cell wall forms. This secondary wall is made of lignin and cellulose, woven together tightly, to prevent further growth and to form and strong protective barrier. Cytoplasm Size: Unmeasurable Basic Function: * Helps dissolve waste products * Creates a "medium" for vesicles to travel through * Aids in cell metabolism * Serves as a home for the cytoskeleton. The cytoplasm is the jelly-like material that makes up much of the cell. It is 80% water and usually clear in color. It also contains many salts. The liquid portion is referred to as cytosol. In fact, "cytoplasm" means "cell substance." The cytoplasm is also the home of the cytoskeleton, a network of cytoplasmic filaments that are responsible for the movement of the cell. The cytoplasm is constantly moving and churning due to cytoplasmic streaming. Golgi Apparatus Size: Between 2 and 3? Basic Function: * Serves as "processing center" for cell. * Packages and processes new proteins. * Prepares proteins for secretion or storage. The Golgi Apparatus is a series of stacked membranes in the cytoplasm that packages proteins for secretion or storage in vesicles. Inside the membranes are sacs of fluid or gel-like substances. The Golgi Apparatus takes proteins in transport sacs from the endoplasmic reticulum and sends it through a series of these membranes. The proteins are then "modified"' as they pass from membrane to membrane. After the vesicle of proteins has finished its trip through the Golgi Apparatus, it buds off the organelle in a Golgi sac, ready to be stored or transported to other parts of the body. Cell Membrane Size: 7 to 8 NM (nanometers) Basic Function: * Controls what enters and exits the cell. * Separates cell from outer environment. On the outside of all cells, there is a layer of protein and lipid (fat) called the cell membrane or the plasma membrane. This membrane is found in ALL cells. The membrane is selectively permeable, meaning it allows some molecules to enter and some not to. The membrane allows molecules in through two forms of transport, active and passive. Passive transport consists of simple diffusion through the pores in the membrane or carrier molecules. Active transport consists of endocytosis, exocytosis, and the sodium- potassium pump. The membrane also protects the cell from the outside environment, keeping the cytoplasm and its organelles in, and all of the stuff outside out. Mitochondria Size: 2 to 3 ?m Basic Function: * Serves as "respiration" center" for cell. * Makes energy for the cell. Floating inside the cytoplasm are a series of fairly large organelles called Mitochondria. These organelles, the size of some bacteria, serve as the cell's respiration centers, the place where energy for the cell is produced. Since the Mitochondria serves as a center for energy production, there are varying numbers of mitochondria in different cells. Muscles have many mitochondria due to the amount of energy they need, but skin cells have very few. The mitochondria (singular: mitochondrion) have two membranes. The outer membrane protects the organelle, and the inner membrane is folded into a series cristae or long folds. Endoplasmic Reticulum Size: Highly variable Basic Function: * Serves as "transportation system" for cell. * Moves proteins and vesicles around cell. The Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (or ER) serves as a home for the ribosomes of a cell and as a "highway" for the cell's proteins to be transported on. Being close to the ribosomes allows for the quick transfer of proteins from them to the rest of the cell. This "highway" is composed of interconnected membranes and vesicles. The process of transporting these newly created proteins is critical to the cell, and is required for furthur survival. The ER is very closely associated with the Golgi Apparatus. Vacuole Size: Varies from 10+? to quite small. Basic Function: * Serves as large storage centers for cell. * Hold water and many nutrients Inside the cell, surrounded by the cytoplasm, is

Character Analysis Ricky in American Beauty Essay Example

Character Analysis Ricky in American Beauty Essay Example Character Analysis Ricky in American Beauty Paper Character Analysis Ricky in American Beauty Paper Essay Topic: American Beauty Film Where is the beauty in a plastic bag, a deceased bird, a dead person? Strange questions you may think if you havent seen the film American Beauty but it is one persons obsession with beauty that creates a fascination and a particular attraction towards it that makes it all comprehensible. Ricky Fitz, the new next door neighbour to the troubled Burnham family, adds a new dimension to their mundane lives, in some cases simplifying their situation and in other cases, complicating it. Ricky is generally a very interesting character that really captures an audience and entices them to look at life from another angle. He has a poor, harmful family relationship that he looks to escape from through change, a characteristic of all the characters in the film. He shares a sensual and physical relationship with the girl next door, Jane, whilst he also has a strong relationship with her father, Lester, a some what complacent and immature character. It is Rickys vision of beauty though, that really makes him stand out and makes him so quizzical. Ricky is generally a very insightful person, curious and up front. He is very honest about his feelings and his past, illustrated many times, but particularly when Jane asked him why he was sent to a mental institution and he was able to answer calmly and confidently. He dresses in a very specific way which is ordered and neat, described by another character, Angela, as a bible salesman. This is understandable due to the regimented life he lived, ruled by an ex-army officer, his father. His house is very symmetrical and cold, a symbol of the lack of connection between family members. Everything in the house is in perfect order and very clean; the slightest thing out of place would have been recognised suggested by the situation when Rickys father was able to work out that Ricky had been in his room, violently reacting. His bedroom is very orderly, clothes neatly folded and shelves stacked very neatly. His room expresses no colour or warmth, it is just an imperfect and futile room. Emotionally, Ricky comes across as strong, saying, I dont get scared but was institutionalised for losing control and being pushed over the edge. Everything bad about Rickys character could be blamed on the morose state of his family relationship. It is worth contemplating that if Ricky didnt get out when he did he could have turned out like his mother, an abused, reclusive person. As a result she was always on edge and couldnt relax around her husband. Ricky was abused by his father, but obviously not to the extent of his mother. We know this by the two scenes when he was physically assaulted by his father, yet he just accepted it. The family is a picture of dysfunction, illustrated by the scene when they are all sitting on the couch and the mother is trying to face the other way and avoid confrontation, the father is sitting upright, trying to act as the boss and Ricky on the other end absorbing the awkward silence of the moment. Ricky is eighteen and yet his father still does not know how to act around him or hold a proper conversation with him. There is also no trust between father and son depicted by the scene when Ricky had supply a urine sample yet he deceived his father by giving him a false supply. It is like his father saw his role, solely to teach Ricky structure and discipline. When Ricky eventually leaves, although a touching moment, there is no real emotion shown, he was not sad to leave. Ricky found a rare and hidden beauty in Jane, the girl from the adjacent house. To the average person, Jane is portrayed as a confused, unattractive and depressed person. However Ricky sees a form of beauty that we cant, attracting the two toward each other. Jane is strangely comforted by the attention of being filmed by Ricky making her curious about what he found interest about her. She even believes that she is unattractive portrayed by her interested in plastic surgery. Ricky remains totally focussed on Jane. He sees that no other girl has this kind of beauty that she has represented by his filming when he avoids the stereotypical beauty in Angela and zooms in on Janes reflection in the mirror. The development of their relationship allows Jane to open up and become more honest to herself and others; she starts to develop some of the personal traits of Ricky. A good example of this is when she stands up to her father and tells him that she is embarrassed by the way he acts when Angela is staying over. Something that she wouldnt have done before she met Ricky. Despite growing in similarity, when they contemplated a life away from home, their differences become obvious as Jane still feels for her family despite not sharing a great relationship with them. Lester Burnham, a casual and unenthusiastic character, is almost brought to life and re-ignited by Ricky. Arguably it was the beauty of Angela that was responsible for the rebirth but his encounter with Ricky gave him confidence and mental strength to change depicted through the party scene when Ricky calmly and boldly quit his job, an issue that most of us would have a lot of trouble doing. Lester responded by say, You have just become my personal hero, so impressed by his actions. It was the turning point in Lesters stupid little life when he started to take responsibility for his actions and do something about his mundane life. He became more assured and gained a belief in himself that he had never had before. We can draw this conclusion due to his actions, such as buying a car he had always wanted, quit his job and started to work out. The two share a close relationship but not as close as Rickys dad thinks. It is this misunderstanding that brings about Lesters death. Therefore it is arguable to say that the relationship had a positive and negative effect for Lester. Ricky does not see beauty in a rose, perfection, or a slim blonde but in obscure, natural elements. He describes beauty as though God is looking at you. The most beautiful thing he has ever filmed was a plastic bag, describing the electricity in it and that this bag was just dancing with me. To us the bag is just swirling around in the air, but Ricky can see the beauty in the lovely transient movement of the bag. Earlier in the film Jane and Angela caught him filming a dead bird. To him this was another form of beauty as was Lesters dead body, with his head resting on the table, blood streaming from his head. It makes Ricky happy to think that Lester was now free and contented. It seems that the seductive beauty that Ricky sees is the only thing that is capable of making him drop his guard and show any sort of emotion. Teeming with tears, he explains, Sometimes there is so much beauty in the world that I feel I cant take it. It is just evidence that beauty has such a great impact on people, even the most mentally strong.

Sense and Nonsense

Sense and Nonsense Sense and Nonsense Sense and Nonsense By Maeve Maddox A reader who heard a doctor describe a patient as â€Å"fluent and sensicle† has asked if sensicle is a word. Sensicle (more often spelled sensical) is a word in the sense that couth is a word, or combobulate or ept. Humorists have long delighted in making comical back-formations of unpaired words like nonsensical, discombobulate, and inept. unpaired word: a word that appears to have a related word that does not in fact exist in contemporary usage. Such words may have a prefix or suffix that implies an antonym that replicates the word minus the supposed affix. Nowadays, when so many native English speakers are lightly educated in the mother tongue, what begins as a witticism may be taken seriously by readers or listeners who lack the information necessary to understand the joke. For example, the following statements are not intended to be funny: I think the real issue that most people take with Iraq was simply that it  wasnt sensicle.   Their recommendation to remove that foam piece  wasnt sensicle  to me.   [Sufferers of] Brocas aphasia cant produce  fluent,  sensical speech. In terms of tax dollars, the Court found that to continue to waste dollars during the appeal  wasnt sensical. The ban to serve sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces in restaurants proved [to be a] law that just  wasnt sensical  enough to pass. Nonsensical is a â€Å"real† word. It means, â€Å"making no sense, absurd.† The -ical ending also appears in the unwieldy but acceptable adjective for the term common sense: commonsensical. Used alone, sensical is nonstandard usage. The frequently seen use of sensical in a medical context may derive from statements like this in texts about aphasia: In 1874, Carl Wernicke reported patients with a different type of difficulty: fluent but often non-sensical speech. Hyphenating the word nonsensical contributes to the notion that sensical is detachable. The notion of â€Å"non-sensical† is that the speech of the afflicted person â€Å"makes no sense.† The noun for that kind of speech is nonsense. The adjective is nonsensical without a hyphen. Another possibility is: incoherent (adjective): without logical connection or natural sequence of ideas; inconsistent, rambling, disjointed. Here are suggested corrections for the above examples: I think the real issue that most people take with Iraq was simply that it  wasnt sensible.   Their recommendation to remove that foam piece  didn’t make sense to me.   [Sufferers of] Brocas aphasia cant produce  fluent,  coherent speech. In terms of tax dollars, the Court found that to continue to waste dollars during the appeal  wasnt reasonable. The ban to serve sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces in restaurants proved [to be a] law that just  wasnt practical enough to pass. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? AMERICAN GOVERNMENT LESSON 1 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

AMERICAN GOVERNMENT LESSON 1 - Essay Example According to Glidden and Hill (2008, pg. 1), â€Å"The people elect public officials to represent them in free and frequent elections. People start voting to tell the government what they need at the age of eighteen.† An example of this is the upcoming presidential election. Anyone who is eligible to vote can cast a ballot for whom they wish to be president. The principle of limited power was born out of the fear that Americans had at the time since they had just gained independence. They now had their own power and freedoms and were not about to hand it over fully and freely to the government. Essentially, tyranny was their greatest fear because of the circumstances. According to Glidden and Hill (2008, pg. 1), â€Å"Many states pressured the framers of the constitution to add a Bill of Rights, or a list of the basic rights of citizens. The framers also made the national and state governments share power. But whatever the power, the people gave it to the government and they could take it away.† An example of this in today’s world is the rules governing equal opportunity rights. The next principle for discussion is the sharing of power. According to Glidden and Hill (2008, pg. 1), â€Å"Americas government was based on Federalism, where power is divided between the Federal (national) and state governments. The constitution states what powers the Federal government has and leaves the rest for the states. Whenever a dispute arises the constitution is the â€Å"supreme law of the land.† An example of this is gambling. Some states allow it, and some do not. There is no federal law outright forbidding it, though. The fourth principle to discuss is separation of powers. As it stands today, the federal government consists of the legislative, judicial, and executive branches. According to Glidden and Hill (2008, pg. 1), â€Å"The legislative branch includes the congress and House of

Prject Management review Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Prject Management review - Essay Example The two major categories of estimation are ‘Macro or Top-down approach and Micro or Bottom-up approach’ (Sihombing). The Macro or Top-Down approach This approach is used to make a quick and rough estimation of project cost and time, when the time and expense of a detailed estimate are some issues. Often macro approach is carried out during the conception stage as there is no full design or Work Breakdown Structure available. The macro approaches may have high chances of inaccuracy and therefore, only well experienced personnel can do the estimation. With the help of a similar previous project, the estimation becomes easier. As Gray and Larson (2008, p. 134) point out, the expenses for the foremost subunits of the new project would be proportional to foremost subunits in the previous project. The Micro or Bottom-UP approach The Micro approach takes the project design and a ‘roll-up’ of Work Breakdown Structure elements into consideration (Project management). As it is a detailed approach, it requires multiple personnel and much time to complete the process. If the bottom-up estimate is done properly, it can yield accurate cost and time estimates. The costs for the higher level units are obtained by rolling-up the estimated time and cost connected with the lowest level Work Breakdown Structure packages. And this approach renders the most accurate estimation within the time devoted to developing the estimate. Factors affecting the estimation of Cost and Time There are several significant factors that affect the estimation of project cost and time. The most important factors are; Task Definition: The comprehensiveness of the definition of the project helps to determine whether all tasks have been taken into account. Project Structure: The structure compacted with a dedicated project team will always focuses on the effective completion of the project. Padding: there are chances of increasing the estimates in order to consider the unknown risks which in turn may cause an unwanted trade-off. Culture: It refers to the acceptable behavior of the organization which influences the estimation. Downtime: It is the lapse of time which affects the time estimate due to equipment repairs, holidays, vacations, etc. II An Ideal Approach According to Rosenau and Githens (2006, p. 133), planning, estimating, and resourcing are the most important elements of a successful project; and these elements may seem to be separate issues, but required to be conducted in parallel as they directly influence each other. Estimation of time and cost is needed per each type of resources for every part of the work to be done. An ideal approach from the part of the project manager would be to hold all the different elements and criteria together in a multi-dimensional model. The project manager should mak e sure that the estimation is done by a person who is most familiar with the task. And if possible, it is better to collect estimates from several people and find the variation of risk assessment. In order to avoid the ‘group think’, multiple estimates must be conducted independently. The project manager should use consistent units while estimating task time and the estimates should be based on normal conditions. The

Sophocles Antigone †Comparing the Symbolic Alignment Utilized by Creo

Sophocles' Antigone – Comparing the Symbolic Alignment Utilized by Creon and President George Bush ... he who has not first laid his foundations may be able with great ability to lay them afterwards, but they will be laid with trouble to the architect and danger to the building. - The Prince by Machiavelli Sophocles addresses this very problem in his play Antigone by the methods Creon uses to rule Thebes. Creon begins ruling Thebes in a very difficult time and circumstance. The polis has been embroiled in tragedy for over a generation. Creon must rule the city and consolidate the Theban citizens behind him. He resorts to symbolic means to unite the people, but he goes too far-- he is unyielding in his adherence to the symbolic policy he adopts, and too late becomes aware that he is actually losing the people he tries to lead.Creon capitalizes on recent tragic events in Thebes to consolidate his power and legitimize his position. The latest war in Thebes was waged between two brothers-- Eteocles and Polyneices. Polyneices, the elder brother, was to have the throne; but Eteocles drove him out by convincing the people that Polyneices carried Oedipus' curse. Polyneices went to Argos and raised an army, then returned in order to drive Eteocles out and retake control of Thebes (Oedipus at Colonus 1532-5). In the ensuing battle, the brothers killed each other-- they "worked out their share in common death" (Antigone 162). Their strife is over. Polyneices' army has returned to Argos, leaving the kingship of Thebes to Creon.Creon has just come to power in a city that has had more than its share of grief: King Laius was murdered, then the Sphynx and a plague tormented the polis with death. Next, Oedipus discovered his own crime... ...e question is not unique the ancient Thebes, however, and it behooves us to examine Creon's methods and goals in light of current events. For example, President Bush is currently using the tragedy of the World Trade Center attacks last year to unite the American people... more importantly to unite them under his leadership. His approval ratings are sky-high, up in the 70th percentile, according to polls by Gallup, CNN, USAToday, Fox, the Christian Science Monitor, Time, and others (http://www.pollingreport.com/BushFav.htm). By making his policy one of "Good vs. Evil," he has polarized the conflict, and who wouldn't want to be on the side of the Good? This method is not inherently wrong or bad, but with it come many caveats, as Creon discovered, and as Machiavelli warns. Symbols can be useful tools, but like any good tool, they can be dangerous if used without care.

Elementary School and Middle School Essay

Transitioning from elementary school to middle school is something we all have or had to do! Most kids cringe at the thought of making this huge step in life. For many students this transition can be a time of mixed emotions. Having been through this experience, I will compare and contrast the two, hoping that this will give you a clear picture of elementary and middle school. Elementary and middle school have distinguishable characteristics. In elementary schools, you basically have your homeroom teacher and one other teacher. The movement of students is very limited and you are mostly escorted by a teacher. Teachers are more understanding and are not as demanding because of the student’s age. Fun days are set aside as an award for students that have done what is expected of them. Most of the children are placed in classroom with the same students each year. Elementary school is very important in our young student’s lives; this is where it all starts. However, middle school students are expected to execute their daily tasks without assistance. Teachers are there to direct the students in right direction; everything else is left up to the student. Middle school students have several different classes, in each class it is usually a different teacher. Students have lockers to store their books and other supplies. In middle school students are required to be more independent and serious about school. Elementary school set the pace for all other levels of schooling. Students enter elementary school learning all the basic aspects of school system and the learning process. At this stage in life most students are eager to learn and get excited to learn new things. Elementary is the main point of delivery, it introduces social skills, behavioral adjustments, and basic academic learning. Middle school prepares students for higher education. Ultimately, middle school bridges the gap between elementary and high school. It is definitely a different experience than elementary, but it prepares students for their future and encourages them to be more independent. Elementary schools and middle schools also have common qualities. They are both open Monday through Friday on the same days. Each day students eat lunch at a designated time. All students are expected to sit in desks in an appropriate manner. Teachers require students to be respectful and display good behavior at all times. Homework is given on a daily basis and class discussions are routine also. School is essentially school with minor differences. Each school level has its own pro’s and con’s, they are also very similar. They each have their own benefiting factors and they are used to their advantage. School systems up this way because it is initially what works in our culture. Elementary and middle schools are stepping stones that that help us get from one place to another in our academic life. Each level is an important standpoint for academic excellence and they should be taken seriously so that you can be an effective student/learner.

Essay on Sexual Harassment in the Workplace - 1398 Words

Sexual harassment can be described as any unwanted sexual comments or unwanted sexual advances. People think that in a sexual harassment situation that the offender is always a male but that is not the case, females can also be the harasser. There can be several incidents where a male is sexually harassing a female, female harassing a male, female harassing a female, or a male harassing a male. When sexual harassment occurs it can make any situation uncomfortable, especially if the advances are unwelcome. The EEOC also provides guidance as to some of the circumstances in which sexual harassment can be deemed to have occurred. These include: The victim as well as the harasser may be a woman or a man. A precise defin ition of sexual harassment is hard to provide, however it is often more easily recognized than defined. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission describes sexual harassment as follows: Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other physical or verbal conduct of a sexual nature constitutes sexual harassment when submission to or rejection of this conduct explicitly or implicitly affects an individual’s employment, unreasonably interferes with an individual’s work performance, or creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive work environment. Sexual harassment can take two forms. First, whenever an employee is required or requested to engage in or submit to sexual acts as a term or condition of employment, assignment or job benefit. Second, sexual harassment may exist when comments, conduct, or actions of the employer, supervisors, or coworkers creates an unwelcome or hostile work environment. Managers should be mindful of both and seek to prevent them. The courts have recognized these two categories of sexual harassment and have imposed liabilities based on each of them. The current state of our economy has affected many Americans, including myself. On May of last year, I was forced to accept a pay wage that was insignificant to the amount of work that I was completing for my employer and company. I am being taken advantage of, along with my co-workers as well. Semiotics and Sport Communication Research †MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the Semiotics and Sport Communication Research. Answer: Introduction: Communication theory is based on the technology that is transmission of information that may be through a computer or a written word and has to be between people, people and machines or machines and machines (Chandler 2017). A sense of impact of computerization and telecommunication is present that is almost like all writers have gone on line with something by now. There are exceptions of few fictions that has been shaped in a serious way with the help of the communication as suggested by some of the renowned writers. Communication process is regarded as the flow of information from one person to another and this can be regarded as the only one activity that controls, manages and plans everything. In this essay, semiotics is a communication theory and advertising has been chosen as the professional practice that is going to be talked about in this entire assignment. In this essay, the communication theory will be explained along with the role of the semiotics in the process of commun ication and its impact and its usefulness in their profession of the advertising. The utility of the semiotics along with the decoding process in the different branding and promotional activities will also be explained. Different images have also been used in this essay that will help in understanding the use of the semiotics in the advertisements like the print media. The theory of semiotics is all about the social branch that has the primary motive to investigate the significant human practices that has special cultural and social circumstances. Semiotics also tries to explain the making of the social practice as it has been defined by some as the signs of life in the society (Holmberg and Holm 2017). Semiotics is that hidden sign in advertising that persuades the customers to buy the products. The semiotics eventually became the major approach in the cultural studies in the late 1960s (Quinn and Quinn 2017). Lastly, it can be said that the attempts of the advertising are to connect to the cultural myths that is present in our society of advertising. There is a need to understand the products and how they are linked with the advertising world. The tendency of advertising is to be critiqued that is a part of the social institution that has helped to perform the neutralizing function that is the dominant ideology of the culture (Skarpelos 2017). In case of the advertisements, the semiotics help the advertisements to become easily identified with the target market. In most of the advertising plays of common reference, knowledge etc. is to make them relevant to their group of target consumers. For an instance it can be said that the ads which focus on the retro look might refer to the era of the Doordarshan news reader, that has black and white ambiance and the target would be the people of 30 of their era (Utoyo 2017). Semiotics can easily be used to decode the advertising as well as for the creation of the advertising. In case of the advertising, the work of the semiotics is to help them put in the subtle cues that will attract the target audience towards their product, service and brand. Creating awareness about the semiotics is often used in the world of advertising so that it becomes helpful for them to decode their hidden meanings that has been left behind in the ad (Viana 2017). Some of the specific hidden persuaders are also willing to purchase the product that has less amenable ideas when purchasing the product. The creative team works and the designers has to work on ads that is relevant to the semiotics when working on the purchasing order of the product. The creative team members and the designers are working on the ads that needs to be kept in common the concept of semiotics (Visconti 2017). The symbolic semiotics is something that is most common in the world of advertising. The symbol stands for something that has more meaning in their association. The clothes, background and expressions etc. are all under the usage of the semiotics that is responsible to convey things in particular. In the professional field of advertising, semiotics is something that is solely responsible to attach some of the positive feelings that includes the emotions and the moods that are associated with the logo of the brand and the visual imagery (Wingstedt 2017). The pictures that has been used along with the settings, colored pictures used, the logos that consists of the serif non serif, curved, straight and the different fonts that are used to serve on the impacts of the brand that has the consumer carriers in them. The usage of the semiotics along with the different other things in the world of advertisement needs to grab their attention that has made an intended target market along with the inclusion of the men, women and the kids if they are done in the right way (Jolani, Pahlavann ezhad and Khojaste 2017). For an instance the ads of the automobiles along with the primary themes can be used in the advertising world. There is a concept of the great outdoors that has drove through long open roads and with a sense of escape and space. There is always the visual imagery of the machoism and ruggedness that is evident in most of the automobile ads (Williams 2017). Taking into consideration the alcohol ads it can be stated that there are different visuals of a happening party scene that shows that the people who are drinking the brand are being hawked as a part of their party life. Mostly, in case of the male deodorant ads the irresistibility plays a major factor where the deodorant acts as something which is very charming and by applying it women from all around comes attracted to them. In this case, the women in the vicinity have come all around to assault them, usually the men are young, attractive and glamourous who are taken as the models in the advertisements. Other male products like th e shaving cream in the advertisement of the Old Spice that is the iconic in the category have an adventurous, outdoorsy kind of sport visuals. In most of the persuasive advertisements there is a dependency on the semiotics that has been ordered to work on for improvement. Hence, getting the look of a campaign in any of the media forms that includes the digital, television and the print media has to consider almost each and every element that has the framework of the visuals. This could easily be decoded in order to understand this that will go very well with their age group, gender and the SEC of the selected target consumers. Usually the semiotics is used in the professional world of advertising that has the significant message to use the symbols and signs. The signs that has been used in advertising is an exact representation of the different things that has been signified and whereas in the other cases this may be considered as the symbol that has been associated with it. The notion of the signs and symbol has been used as the conveyer of the ideas that has been initiated from the ancient times in Greece specifically in the fields of philosophy and medicine. Advertising tends to be associated with certain brands and products that has a particular set of beliefs in the minds of the consumers. As per Balci and zgen (2017), the social status, membership of particular social groups and a sense of social individuality has been signified by the chosen products that the consumers intend to consume. The functional ideology of the advertisements has identified by the latent meanings that includes creating it wit h various signs. In order to decode the meaning of these signs, Lee (2017) has identified the three most essential elements. The first element is the structure that needs to be formal in the advertisements that has been successful in creating a relationship goal one sign higher than the other places of the advertisements. The second is the consumers that are not able to read the different connotations of the signs and the third is the connotation that already exists in the cultural background of the consumers. The advertising is a part of the communication marketing that is solely for promoting the products. Most of the commercial ads are found in the newspaper, billboards, televisions and magazines. There are various persuasive techniques that has been adopted by the consumers both with the help of the verbal and the non verbal techniques that will make them convert their message goals to the target audience. These will also influence the life style of the people and the attitude of the people. The pivotal role that has been made in the world of advertising is that its identification of the target market audience. Semiotics is also used to decode the advertisement as well as to create them at the same time. In order to become effective, the advertisements have a tendency to reflect the shifts that is already present in the popular culture (Oswald 2015). In the decoding process for an example in the print media, the semiotics is utilized to analyse the slogans and the images present in certain advertisements. There is a need to study the signs, the formal structure of the advertisements in order to understand the complete analyzation of the semiotics. Through the use of the concept of the visual grammar, Kress and Van suggested that just like the grammar that is a language which describes how the texts, clauses and the sentences are combined, the visual grammar also describes the few of the depicted elements that includes people, place and the things. A theoretical framework has also been stemmed in the seminal work of the social semiotics that has been used to analyse the visual communications. The language is also termed as the language of the semiotic that uses its resources that will be used to express how the communication is made in the real world of social setting. The interactive images that is used in the messages for commun ication could also reflect the feelings. These feelings could easily be interpreted through the gaze of the participants and the social distance of the participants. There are two types of pictures that includes the offer and the demand. In case of the demand, the participants could directly look into the viewers and could easily make them want something whereas in the offer pictures, the participants are offered an information that needs to be taken in by the viewers (Holbrook 2015). In the advertising world, there different types of symbol that includes the images, text, sound and the process. In case of the images, this is the most common form in the world of advertisement that is used in order to make the products sold (Grow 2016). The restaurants that sell the fancy desserts is a main entry to the market that has to be on the grounds of the billboard advertisements. There is a strategic way to create the billboard advertisement that has been placed just three two miles away from the freeway exit, to where the restaurant for example is located. The picture of a dessert can be placed on the billboard that will help the passer to arouse their appetite and even attract them to the restaurant. There are some of the relevant images that needs to be promoted and that is a common symbol that will help to suffice. For an example if the image of the skull is taken along with the crossbones, just beside a packet of cigarettes, the advertise will reflect that it is harmf ul in nature, that is smoking (Epure, Eisenstat and Dinu 2014). The text will be used to serve as a symbol in the advertising medium and often one word is used to convey the entire message that has the same effectiveness just like that of the picture (Forceville 2017). For an instance the word communist can be flashed on any screen during the political advertisement. This is designed in the political advertisements that will help to disparage the political views and the policies of an opponent. Particularly, in this case there is a significance of the left leaning approach that has been symbolised by words like socialist (Emiro?lu 2017). Hence, a positive message can be drawn that will help in conveying an endorsed political candidate by using words such as the conservative or the bravery so that the candidate can be set apart from his selected opponents. The sounds that are often used in the advertising world, are in a sort of a universal language that will convey the mood and the essence of the message (Danesi 2017). The actual content of the music has to be the symbol for which the products are being advertised or in other words relevant to what it is actually advertised. For an instance, the catchy jingle that will be used in the advertisement song might be at a particular place in the radio business. Eventually the jingle is meant to be stuck in the memory of the specific target audience and could easily become a symbol that could be recalled when it is needed (Chavez 2017). The use of the semiotics in the world of advertisement is through many ways. For an example if in the advertisement a crocodile is used that does not mean that the target customer will remember the crocodile but definitely the logo of the company which is the crocodile itself. The crocodile is not used in its literal meaning. In fact, the semiotics is used to employ the repeated use of the symbols that will signify the product (Butkowski and Tajima 2017). The effectiveness of the message is instantaneous but the branding takes place by the introduction of the symbol that will take a months time to be generated if not the years for the establishment. When the advertisers do this through repeated repetition the combination of the symbols that brings the images, words and the music altogether in one coherent and meaningful composition. The Semiotics has different branches like the syntactic and the pragmatic in the professional world of advertising. Semiotics can be used in marketing and advertising that will help in providing it with different benefits. Semiotics is also used in the campus advertising that is usually unofficial in nature (Belk 2017). This is often used in the form of the posters and the stickers that has made a reason for adopting the different the measures that has a proper synchronisation with its environment. A significant aspect that needs to be care of is all the details that has been avoided in the comparative study that is primarily without any sort of ambiguity. Semiotics is the only reason that made it possible not only to observe it but to justify its existence that has a sign of its existence (Cosenza, Colombari and Gasparri 2017.). Semiotics can also be used in the communication theory that has been referred to as the basic reason to renovation, maintenance and conception. This has bee n referred with the use of the different signs and the symbols that will ensure people making an appropriate measure not only in understanding those signs but also making a proper use of them. In the domain of marketing, not only can it sell the different products but also has the responsibility to establish the brand value at the same time. The effectiveness can be understood from the extended fact of the company that has made ability to repose its brand through the different symbols and the signs (Bell, Warren and Schroeder 2014.). In the promotional campaigns that has been initiated helps in the identification of the different symbols that is important to make the situation lead into the later stages of the dilemma. There are some of the inevitable features that is present in the organisation that has a limited marketing strategy and budget that will make the department understand its maximum returns. Hence the marketing department is required to understand the different resources that is available to them that is within the constrained range of the marketing budget that can be finally harnessed in an opposite manner. Semiotics in the world of advertising and marketing is rapidly changing. The credit goes to the communication and the distribution of the technology that is growing at a global scale and has a significant transformation (Chandler 2017). The consumers are also changing and they no longer consume the brands that has a projection of their escapism and aspiration that were in their past. Semiotics can be turned as an absolute sense of their unique features. The decoding in the advertisement was coined by Kettemann (2013), that has helped in the analysis of their real word and their images. There is a clear assumption that the reality is a quite different from the fiction that has the moral supervisors. The decoding process can be applied on occasions in the advertising practice that also has a drawback that is a satisfactory to the constitutes (Butkowski and Tajima 2017). The decoding process in the communication theory refers to the translation of the received messages. This message epitomizes the receivers constructional ideas and interpretations. The traditional form of semiotics was applied to the structural form of the print media. The importance of the semiotics lies in the beneficial programs like the communication, innovation that has rooted itself in the experience of the human beings. Semiotics helps also in the shifting of the brand that has followers and are responding to their culture and creation. There is a need to consider the cultural environment that are useful in creating it even (Campbell 2014). There is a need to consider the cultural environment that must be created as well as responded. When they will see the responses they must ensure how they can implement better things that will help them to prosper. There are some of the suggestions that might to improve the different market strategies of the semiotics in the professional world of advertisement (Kim and Johnson 2017.). There is always a need to hire professional when using the semiotics in the advertisements like the advertisers and the engineers. The use of the different high level thoughts that are matured enough to use the semiotics in the techniques of marketing. The use of the semiotics must be exactly related to the characteristics of the product that is being advertised. The relevance of this can lead it to an opposite effect (Kettemann 2013). In case of the visual semiotics that is found in the print and the visual advertisement is that the methodology needs to be well perceived and examined. Some believe the fact that the mere use of the visual semiotics can help to compromise the credibility of the interpretations in a descriptive and qualitative way of research, that has a primary reliance towards perception and its s imultaneous senses that needs to be at work and might have a negative influence on the outcomes of the study (Kettemann 2013). the methodological tools need to be ensured on the dependability of the findings of the research. From the above analysis and observations about the semiotics in the advertising profession it can be said that the strategies in the marketing is quite valuable and affective in any organisation. The pictures and the symbols used in the advertising world with the help of the semiotics has not only increased its popularity rate amongst the customers but also leaves an ever lasting impact on them. Using the conditions of the semiotics in the advertising world will help in providing a pictorial representation within the company that will help to make an attractive preparation with the help of the professions. At the end of this essay, one will get a complete understanding of what semiotics theory is and how it has helped and influenced in the professional world of advertising. A few recommendations have also been provided so that it might help the ones working in the professional field of advertising. With the help of the different articles a complete analysis of the semiotics has been made that has effectiveness in the world both marketing and advertising. The utility of this process has also been explained along with its pros and cons that will help one in its complete understanding of the factors of the semiotics.
